Jetsonnes – Newspaper, 1980

Stuart : 15 October 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: Can’t Stop It! II – Australian Post-Punk 1979-84 CD

Technically not from the vault, but the earliest studio recording involving John Archer, Doug Falconer, Rob Miles, Mark Seymour and Ray Tosti-Gueira, who were to soon be a sizeable part of Hunters and Collectors.

Newspaper was originally released as a gig giveaway 7″ vinyl single with Miniskirts in Moscow by the International Exiles on the flipside. Recently, it turned up on a CD compilation, which is the source of today’s audio.

Dog live, 2011

Stuart : 8 October 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 3 December 2011, V8’s, Homebush, Sydney, Australia DVD

As much a case of “look what we found!” as anything else, this week we share a recording from last years Hunters reunion gig in Sydney!

We understood that no recording existed, yet we found this slightly scratchy DVD, apparently taken by the V8’s crew. It’s not of a great standard, but we naturally ripped a DVD image of it while it was in our hands, and in turn also ripped the audio off it. Be warned this was from a lossy source (Dolby AC3), but it’s still pretty good.

Hear No Evil acoustic, 1992

Stuart : 1 October 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 23 November 1992, Live Acoustic on MMM Cassette

This week we complete the set of recordings from the MMM live acoustic set of 23 November 1992.

Four songs from this set – Where Do You Go?, True Tears Of Joy, When The River Runs Dry and Holy Grail – were included on the Australian Holy Grail single at the time. We have now provided the three tracks that missed an official release – Imaginary Girl, We The People and, now, Hear No Evil. Surprisingly, all three of these great Cut era songs never found their way onto any official release in live form (!).

Remember This Motion, live 1981

Stuart : 24 September 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1981 05 15 Crystal Ballroom, Melbourne, Australia CD

A few people have asked a good question – on the Spare Parts rarities disc (in the Horn of Plenty box set and now on itunes), there were four recordings from the first Hunters and Collectors gig at the Crystal Ballroom in Melbourne; were there any other songs played?

The answer is yes. In fact, not only yes, but I found a CD of the full eight song gig that must have been created when Spare Parts was under construction 🙂

Today we bring the opening track from this gig; Remember This Motion. Also, we bring a teaser of what is to come – with a frustrating partial track list of the original gig… 🙂

  • Remember This Motion
  • World of Stone (on Spare Parts)
  • Alligator Engine (on Spare Parts)
  • Run Run Run (on Spare Parts)
  • Talking To A Stranger (on Spare Parts)

Long Walk Home, live 1983

Stuart : 17 September 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 18 September 1983, Floreat Hotel, Perth, Australia Cassette

As the band slowly fell apart following The Fireman’s Curse in 1983, creative tensions can be heard dragging the party in two directions – perhaps a form of Birthday Party versus X battle. The latter approach, which eventually won out and resulted in the cracking The Jaws Of Life, can be seen in it’s formative stages in late The Fireman’s Curse era live recordings.

Long Walk Home is an unreleased track from those crossroads between The Fireman’s Curse and The Jaws Of Life. Thematically, it sits alongside The Way To Go Out and Carry Me off Jaws, it’s catchy enough that it has been in my head all week, yet it’s still odd enough to be The Fireman’s Curse material.

This is for the numerous masochists requesting Fireman’s Curse live material. You need this track! 🙂

Lament No More, live in studio 1985

Stuart : 10 September 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 15 January 1985 (best estimate), Live Two Tracks Cassette

Stephen has been writing up a stack of articles for us and requested “Did you find any tapes from those 1985 [Mark] solo gigs? Or any studio versions of Rendering Room, Chocolate Speedway, Remember this Motion, Run it Down or Getting Older???“.

As awareness of the extensiveness of the archives becomes apparent, these requests are getting much harder! 🙂

Most of these requests unfortunately do not appear to exist. However, we have managed to track down a live in studio version of Lament No More, which we recently found is the real name for what we had been calling Run It Down.

I Know

This weeks escapee from the vault is titled I Know – though the story with it is more about what we do not know. We do not know when this was recorded, we do not know what album is was meant to be in, and I can not even find the e-mail where a rare studio recording was requested!

That given, this is the second completely unreleased studio recording to find it’s way out of the archives. Enjoy!

We The People acoustic, 1992

Stuart : 27 August 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 23 November 1992, Live Acoustic on MMM Cassette

Fan Tim has been belting out more articles for us and his request this time was… “wondering if you have any acoustic recordings of songs that were not normally performed ‘unplugged’…“.

Pleased to be able to help with this one. Despite having been a top 100 single in Australia, no officially released live versions of We The People are currently available.

Here we find We The People in it’s strangest form… live acoustic. This is from the same recording that we provided Imaginary Girl from three weeks ago, and is another track that missed making the Australian Holy Grail single b-sides.

Sixteen Tons, 1982

Stuart : 20 August 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1982 09 19 Stranded, Sydney, Australia Cassette

This week’s ‘From the Vault’ is for Tammy, who has been giving us a hand with the articles. Tammy’s request started off innocently enough – “So have you come across any covers?”

The execution was more difficult. Mark has an album of covers on the way, so this is already a hot area. Furthermore, Hunters just did not do a lot of covers, and most of the ones that they have done are known (I Believe, Crime of Passion, Stuck On You etc).

So we had to dig deep for this one… and found a live cover of Sixteen Tons, an American folk song that dates back to 1946. This cover is from the 19th of September 1982, at Stranded in Sydney. This is obscure early Hunters on an unusual tangent.

Good Man Down, Live, 1998

Stuart : 13 August 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 22 March 1998, Hi Fi Bar, Melbourne, Australia DAT

This week fan Trevor has been helping us out with the articles and requests… “As for a request, nothing specific, perhaps something from Juggernaut we haven’t heard before…

Well, this one is not easy, as not a lot of Juggernaut was played live, and I have not come across a lot of obscure material from this era.

Still, there are a few odds and ends. Here is a live recording of the album track Good Man Down, taken from the final Hi Fi gig in Melbourne! Please note this is one of many recordings that will probably sound better after some magic from Rob…

Check it out in CD quality FLAC and 256kbps mp3 (in a zip file).

Imaginary Girl, Live Acoustic, 1992

Stuart : 6 August 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 23 November 1992, Live Acoustic on MMM Cassette

True Believers fan Tim has been helping us out with the articles, so it was time he got a song pick. Tim told us – “As far as rare tracks go, I wonder if you have any alternate (live, demo, whatever) versions of Imaginary Girl? I know it’s not too adventurous, but it’s the only H & C song my wife likes…”

As I was thinking of possibilities, all of a sudden a great quality recording of Imaginary Girl started playing on the tape I was recording. From 23 November 1993, it was from the MMM live to air acoustic session. Some tracks from this ended up as b-sides on the Australian Holy Grail single, but Imaginary Girl was left off it.

Check it out in CD quality FLAC and 256kbps mp3 (in a zip file).

Little Chalkie, Live 1983

Stuart : 29 July 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 16 Sep 1983, Red Parrot, Perth, Australia Cassette

True Believers fan Roger typed out some Hunters articles for us in ripping time, so I asked him for anything he could find of interest as a rarity. Roger responded: “I am fascinated by Fireman’s Curse… Call it morbid curiousity, but demos, outtakes or live versions of any of it would be curious and truly rare… My favorite album is probably Jaws of Life. Any outtakes from that record would be great.

So here’s one for you. It appears that a song that we associate with The Jaws of Life originated a little bit earlier. We hereby present a Fireman’s Curse era live recording of Little Chalkie. This is a corker. Please note the quality here is not as good as may eventuate later – it’s from a cassette.

Check it out in CD quality FLAC and 256kbps mp3 (in a zip file).

If You Want Me

Stuart : 22 July 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: Recorded 1991; 2008 Liberation Records CD compilation labelled “Tracks for Rarities Disc” (some tracks were used in “Spare Parts” compilation)

Came across a CD titled “Tracks for Rarities Disc” which had some tracks on it. First six tracks were live recordings that ended up on Spare Parts. Nothing remarkable there. Then… Track 7… what on earth is “If You Want Me”…?

Check it out in CD quality FLAC and 256kbps mp3 (in a zip file).

Vault – Information

Stuart : 15 July 2012 12:00 : Vault

The Vault refers to a large collection of Hunters and Collectors related recordings that have quietly aged in storage for up to 32 years before being opened up to fans in July 2012.

The Vault recordings cover the full history of the band. Most recordings are either DAT tapes or Type 2 Cassettes, though there are a few recordings in other formats, such as vinyl, VHS with audio data on them and Type 1 Cassettes. To date, the focus has been overwhelmingly on audio, though video archives do also exist.

Being perfectionists, Hunters and Collectors would prefer work being done before entire recordings are made available in one form or another. So for the time being, we have an agreement to provide one rare track every week, with no more than 5 or 6 tracks available at once. We have used this arrangement to provide an extraordinary range of long lost gems.

The lineage for Vault tracks is as follows:

Cassette Tapes

Earlier recordings: Nakamichi BX-1 [2 x RCA Line Out] ->[2 x XLR Mic/Instrument In] Motu Audio Express [USB] -> [USB] PC Adobe Audition 5.0.2 -> Digital format (FLAC)
