Fresh from Hunters & Collectors’ reunion tour, trumpet player Jack Howard has quietly issued his sixth solo album. Not out to conquer the world, Howard is content doing his own thing; understated and prolific. “A simple plan,” he sings at the start of the album, “is always best.” Showcasing the stellar Long Lost Brothers – including Mark Ferrie on bass and Ed Bates on pedal steel – these are songs that get under your skin. “Hit a nerve,” Howard sings in Sweet Hand of Mercy, “gonna do some drilling”. He’s found a dozen gems. Jack Howard is a diamond in the rough.
