Songwriting has always been a marriage of feeling and hard truth, a way of seeing the world and looking ahead. I have often written in crisis. Lockdowns were a watershed, a valley I passed though alone. Isolation forced me to confront the kind of life I was living. My marriage to Jo ended after 29 years as did my artistic relationship with Hunters and Collectors. I started boxing in the garage, for no other reason than to purge energy and in the process, I fell in love with the movement and skill. I also read Joan Didion. One line in particular: “the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life – is the source from which self-respect springs.” How to pick up the pieces and move on.
