Commentary

“Don’t You Know Me?” was the melodic first single to Mark Seymour’s second debut album, “One Eyed Man”. The song can not be classed as anything but ‘pop’ and is ideally suited to radio. It is songs like this that bring memories of Crowded House to some people.

Australian media as a whole has to a large degree neglected this fine piece of pop work (and it’s accompanying video). There has been at least one radio interview where Mark has played this song solo with a guitar, and there was an appearance on the moderately well know TV program “Rove Live” with the ‘One Eyed Man’ band. The Capital Radio network has given it some support while the Austereo Radio network and JJJ have more or less ignored the song. The most obscure support to date is that some country cable show has apparently been giving it a bit of a plug.

The song itself is an odd tale of falling deeply in love and quickly progresses through the infatuation to ask some serious questions (“would you die for me”). The relationship is slightly obscure and a bit odd in the usual Mark Seymour style (“be careful what you say before you go” etc.).

Lyrics

I’m falling, falling for you again
It’s so easy, I’m learning how to play
Long summer nights
You keep on coming back
As the lights go down
You were crying in my arms
It’s high time, to say what’s on your mind before you go

Don’t you know me?
You know I fall everytime
We just happen to be
Forever partners in a crime

In a heatwave you’re the cool blue water
Your wicked smile
I’m drowning in your eyes
Such an easy way
We don’t have to try
Around the corner, be careful what you say before you go

Don’t you know me?
You know I fall every time
We just happen to be
Forever partners in a crime

Oh baby don’t cry
Don’t cry
Baby don’t you lie to me

Oh baby don’t cry
Don’t cry
Baby would you die, would you die for me?

Don’t you know me?
You know I fall every time
We just happen to be
Together partners

Don’t you know me?
You know I fall every time
We just happen to be
Together partners in a crime
