“Also, check Fire from 19860705-SeaviewBallroom-Live.flac. Interesting coincidence…”, the e-mail from John Archer read.
So we retrieved the relevant recording, found Everything’s On Fire and listened to it three times, including before and after. Nothing notable. What did this even mean?
On Saturday in Rutherglen, we mentioned our confusion to John. “No, Fire,” he replied.
It turns out Fire, hidden deep in this quality unreleased live recording, is the one and only Bruce Springsteen cover performed in the history of Hunters and Collectors.
Fire has a strange history of it’s own. Written by Bruce Springsteen for the Darkness on the Edge of Town album, the song was thrown out and became a 1978 hit for the Pointer Sisters. The Boss included a live version on Live/1975-85 before a studio version eventually appeared in the 2010 album The Promise, which is a 2 CD set of outtakes from the Darkness album.
For Hunters and Collectors, the performance here included a guest appearance from Sherrine on backing vocals. We know precious little more about how this came to occur.
With the Hunters and Bruce concerts on this weekend, there can be no better time to crack out this ultra rare gem… 🙂
Wow, thanks Stuart!
That was a cool little oddity!
I assume that must have been on the tour where Big Pig were supporting as Sherine Abeyratne was singing with Big Pig (and damn was she hot!). She had a killer voice.
Big Pig also had Tony Antoniades who plays harmonica on “The Way To Go Out” lp on “Follow Me No More”, so I assume there must have been some friendship/association between the two bands.
