Hayley’s Doorstep live 1983

Source: 1983 10 29 Gluepot, Auckland, New Zealand Cassette

Early in The Vault series – back on 29 July 2012 – we revealed a track that gave us much joy. It was Little Chalkie, played live during The Fireman’s Curse era before the band disintegrated and re-emerged a solid pub rock band. Chalkie went on to appear on The Jaws of Life and become a fan favourite.

This week, we reveal the second song known from The Jaws of Life that first appeared in The Fireman’s Curse era. And the track is Hayley’s Doorstep – one of the few tracks from The Jaws of Life not to have appeared on The Way To Go Out or any other official live recording.

We hope you like it!

Interesting. To me it sounds like Mark really taking control on this one and dominating with his vocals and his slide guitar being the driving force of the song. Very much the sound of what would happen with Jaws. I imagine Perano must have felt very much in the backseat on this one?

Funny because when I saw them in 84 what I think was the last show of the Jaws tour Hayley’s Doorstep was the one song they didn’t play from the Jaws album. Maybe they were already over it as a thing from the past while Follow Me No More and The Unbeliever and Throw Your Arms were pointing to their new direction (some more accurately than others).

    Nice find Stuart!

I think this was the gig that Mark so fondly wrote about in his book “13 ton theory”, if so, it was for me at least, and him, and I believe many others who were there that night, dancing frenetically on tables and just ALL truly “in the zone” of that moment, that place, and that time, just totally consumed in the music, the heat of the crowd and their collective energy. An incredible night, and the defining moment of greatness for me was the chant during Run Run Run…..still to this day it gives me an incredible feeling of excitement just thinking of it being played to THAT audience, THAT night. To this day Still THE highlight of my live music experience.

If any other songs are available from that gig, particularly the aforementioned, please make it/them available too. Cheers !!!
