Dedicated fans have access to an impressive variety of studio and live Talking To A Stranger versions, found across different album and single releases over the years.
Yet the song has enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks as the only song with two versions on the upcoming Crucible Hunters and Collectors tribute album. Birds of Tokyo have released a great cover, while The Avalanches a cracking remix complete with a video clip reworked from the original Richard Lowenstein classic. Stranger has got more media in the last fortnight than it possibly ever had at release!
So why a live version of Talking To A Stranger from 1991?
For many years, Stranger was left off live set lists, as was everything that pre-dated the Jaws of Life album. Then at the time of the Collected Works best of, Stranger was dug out of the archives for another run. Yet the version that appeared at this time differs from both the early live version on Spare Parts and the later live version found on Under One Roof.
We won’t give much more away. Give it a run 🙂
Crikey that was weird!! Even “stranger” that I thought it could be.
They pretty much just crank through the thing.. the finer details are lost at the expense of just thumping the beast out. Even the lyrics in english so the average yobo punter could get it. Still a really interesting different perspective.
Still, are there any other odd tracks from these “Collected Works” type shows?
Hi Mark,
There may be but this is the most obvious strange track of the Collected Works era… generally there is still stacks of material; early versions, demos, some unreleased tracks etc 🙂
Cheers
I keep listening to this version. It does my head in. Compared to the arty way it was played originally with the wang and all this is just bashing it over the head. Still a big difference to deliver a song like this to punters in St Kilda vs Centrol Coast leagues at Gosford!!
I keep looking forward to whatever you have to put out there Stuart!!! It just makes an interesting band even more interesting.
