Commentary

Jack notes on his bandcamp:

A very scattered lyric written on a long bus ride home to Melbourne. All I tried to do was rhyme whatever came into my head. Later, I tried to make some sense of it but gave up. I’ve left it in what I’d like to think is an enigmatic state! Beautiful accidental orchestration – the pedal steel, the horns, the octavided trumpet solo. Love this.

Lyrics

The lark ascends, some distant land
Quiet green, the sleight of hand
Bombs descend, mysterious island
Giant beasts race through the sand

Hardy souls, stiff upper lips
Lovely girls, sweet fingertips
Driving down to the river’s edge
My heart of glass, no bets to hedge

If you see her passing by
Cross your heart and hope to die

Across the fields and faraway
Lightning strikes, here comes the rain
Go down to the river’s edge
Giant steps don’t leave a trace

If you see her passing by
Cross your heart and hope to die

Finally calm, no pain today
Free from harm, no words to say
Three words unspoke, my gaze averts
Dream my dreams, my aim perverts
