Australian rock anthems may seem at odds with the greatest love songs of all time but not to Hunters and Collectors trumpet and keyboard player Jack Howard.
Howard will be performing the songs of Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David at the Yarraville Club on Friday, May 30.
“There was a record sitting in my parents’ record collection, which went ignored for a long time and that was Burt Bacharach’s Reach Out, and when I finally discovered it, there was these fantastic arrangements on it,” Howard said.
“I have always had that horn and string arrangement sensibility, which is one of the features of Hunters.
“With the Bacharach songs, you can’t wing it, there are a lot of chord changes and tricky melodies and we have to be right on our game.”
Howard said audiences could expect a faithful rendition of the classics including “The Look of Love”, “Alfie”, “Say A Little Prayer”, “Close To You” and “What The World Needs Now”.
The Look of Love show will also feature the Michael sisters Heather and Marj on vocals, John Berto on guitar, Rob Walker (bass), Greg Murray (drums) and Amy Valent Curlis (percussion).
Howard has just released a new album, Day Of The Dog, which will be available at the show.
