Long-dormant Australian sample pop group The Avalanches haven’t released an album in some 13 years, but we’ve been treated to a string of hints, suggestions and teasers that they are getting back to business.
The past 18 months have seen the group at their busiest since they released ‘Since I Left You’, with them gracing us with everything from a mixtape to a new, spoken word demo to a bizarre number for the new King Kong musical to an actual, sensible suggestion that a new album would arrive around February next year. Today they’ve dropped eight minutes of new material – sort of.
Stalking To A Stranger (Planets Collide mix) is actually a remix of Australian rock band Hunters & Collectors’ 1982 single Talking To A Stranger, taken from an upcoming Hunters & Collectors covers album, which also features the likes of Eddie Vedder, Neil Finn and The Living End. The Avalanches mix draws out the beat tracks and gets a little bit dubby, adding a bit of skipping disco percussion to proceedings.
The fact that we’ve got such a long piece of new material from the group is worth celebrating – this is the first time that The Avalanches have dropped any official material since their remix of Franz Ferdinand’s Fade Together in 2006 (although they did put out a bootleg mashup of Wham and Digitalism in 2007, which was awesome).
Liberation Music will release ‘Crucible: The Songs Of Hunters & Collectors’ on September 27th.
