Reworking on Hunters & Collectors’ “Talking to a Stranger” will see official release this month

Little-heard-from Aussies the Avalanches unveiled a new track and music video over the weekend. No, the sample-savvy crew didn’t share a piece of their long-awaited follow-up to 2000’s masterful Since I Left You. Instead, they dropped their contribution to Crucible: The Songs of Hunters & Collectors, a tribute compilation honoring Australian rock outfit Hunters & Collectors.

As SPIN previously reported, the Avalanches remixed Hunters & Collectors’ already dance-friendly 1982 single “Talking to a Stranger.” Titled “Stalking to a Stranger (Planets Collide Remix),” the redux fades the doomy, post-punk groove of the original with disco. Stuffed with plucky horns, vocal shavings, and a delirious tempo, the Avalanches’ latest skews darker than the sun-drenched pleasure cruise enjoyed on their classic debut album.

Crucible: The Songs of Hunters & Collectors arrives September 27 via Liberation Music. Other artists featured on the collection include Eddie Vedder and Neil Finn, Cloud Control, the Living End, and Alpine.
