The Avalanches have released their remix of Hunters & Collectors’ first single Talking To A Stranger, which will feature on the upcoming tribute album Crucible – A Tribute To Hunters & Collectors.

The single, which appeared on Hunters & Collectors’ self-titled 1982 debut, has been reworked with a slice of Dan Hartman’s disco hit Relight My Fire and rechristened as Stalking To A Stranger (Planets Collide Remix).

“At a fundamental level, it was both an honour and incredibly daunting to be asked to remix such an incredible song,” says Avalanches founding member Robbie Chater. “What a stunning and risky way to announce your presence as a new band. Hunters & Collectors pulled it off though. We loved the Conny Plank and Krautrock influences, the Hunters really were ahead of the curve with this track. There’s a sense of dread and darkness that you can’t quite put your finger on, which we tried to maintain, while fucking it up a bit to make it appealing to leftfield DJs and music lovers. Mark Seymour is a Western Bulldogs fanatic and us Footscray lifers have to stick together!”

The remix has been released in two forms: a four-and-a-half minute album version and an extended seven-minute disco edit. Watch the album version below and the extended cut at the bottom of the article – the full tribute album Crucible – A Tribute To Hunters & Collectors will be released on September 27.

As for the long-awaited follow-up to 2000’s Since I Left You, Modular have confirmed The Avalanches are still in the studio, putting the finishing touches on an album that was supposed to be out three years ago. The album will reportedly feature contributions from Ariel Pink, rapper Danny Brown and Royal Trux’s Jennifer Herrema on a track called The Stepkids, which the band reckon is “probably the best song we ever done.”
