This year’s Grand Final entertainment will have a homegrown feel, after Australian rockers Hunters and Collectors and Birds of Tokyo were announced as headline acts.

Hunters and Collectors, whose hit Holy Grail has become synonymous with football’s biggest day, will re-form to take the stage at the MCG on September 28.

The group, whose other classics include Throw Your Arms Around Me and When The River Runs Dry, will play a set during the Virgin Australia half-time break.

Birds of Tokyo, whose hit Lanterns has taken the charts by storm, will take the stage prior to the first bounce, before the bands both perform at The Premiership Party after the game.

Tina Arena will sing the national anthem.

League chief executive Andrew Demetriou said there would be something in the Grand Final entertainment for everybody.

“It’s Australia’s game, and when we heard there was a possibility of Hunters and Collectors reforming just for us, we thought that was a great opportunity,” he said.

“They have probably got one of the great anthems that connects to our game so that was an easy decision.

“Then once Birds of Tokyo were available, given their popularity as well, we thought we’d go for two great eras of Australian rock and we’re just blessed that they said yes.”

The emerging Birds of Tokyo hail from Perth, and released their No.1 ARIA album March Fires this year.

Hunters and Collectors formed in 1981 and between 1986-94 were one of the biggest and best live acts in the country.

The bands were officially unveiled on Monday as the AFL launched the 2013 finals series.
