I wrote this and called it Melbourne on the back of the record Lightheavyweight. All of the tracks there are named after cities that we passed through on The Oils tour of 2017. I played this track at the record launch and it’s now become a regular band tune too. When the pedal steel and flugel join together after the guitar solo, we have a state of grace. A very introspective Dogs Bar lyric. Imagining an affair that begins at 7.00, passes through various stages of band-watching, too much whiskey and a messy one night stand.
A small stage, red curtain
Well-lit, cheek bones on show
Sparse crowd, a resonant twang
Attention focussed, deep within
Hearts aflutter, the boys and girls
The mystery train, they’re all aboard
Intoxicated, the thrill of the night
Figures blur, words unsure
—
You start to fall, you fall far
A hand caressed, uncertain smile
You start to fall, you fall again
You never know if it’s real
—
To give and not to give
To have and not to have
You fall again
