[22 February 2024] Mark Seymour & The Undertow today share ‘The Boxer’, the first new music and title track from forthcoming album The Boxer set for release on April 19. It is accompanied by a powerful video shot at Mark’s training gym with trainer Tiffanee Cook, who also graces the album’s front cover.

The Boxer is Mark Seymour’s 11th solo studio album, and the fifth to be credited to Mark Seymour & The Undertow, featuring Cameron McKenzie on guitars, John Favaro on bass, and Peter Maslen on drums, with special guest Cameron Bruce on keys.

Reflecting on the significance of this new body of work and the discipline that inspired it, Mark Seymour shares:
“Songwriting has always been a marriage of feeling and hard truth, a way of seeing the world and looking ahead. I have often written in crisis. Lockdowns were a watershed, a valley I passed though alone. Isolation forced me to confront the kind of life I was living. My marriage to Jo ended after 29 years as did my artistic relationship with Hunters and Collectors. I started boxing in the garage, for no other reason than to purge energy and in the process, I fell in love with the movement and skill. I also read Joan Didion. One line in particular: “the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life – is the source from which self-respect springs.” How to pick up the pieces and move on.”

Mark and his long-time band The Undertow have announced they’ll be going on the road playing songs from The Boxer along with a mix of fan favourites and iconic songs from across the full spectrum of Mark’s storied 40-year career. He has also joined the bill for some of Chris Isaak’s upcoming Australian dates presented by A Day On The Green.

The Boxer is the first release for Mark Seymour & The Undertow since 2020’s acclaimed Slow Dawn (“Arguably the finest album of Seymour’s storied career” – Rhythms. “Album of the year? Without a doubt.” – STACK).
