The annual Red Hot Summer Tour is coming back next January for its 10th anniversary! And to celebrate, they’ve got a special lineup of Aussie legends such as The Angels, James Reyne, The Living End, Killing Heidi, Baby Animals and Boom Crash Opera! For today’s blog, though, we’re just going to be concentrating on the headline act – Hunters and Collectors. This iconic Australian rock band has enjoyed commercial success across Australia during their 20+ year career. Seeing as Melbourne On The Move will be handling the event transportation services – we thought we’d take a look at six things you probably didn’t know about the band!

1. They’ve released 19 albums

During their 17-year original run – the band released nine original studio albums and three live albums – two of which were released on DVD as well. From 1990 to 2008 seven compilation albums were also released. Their 1986 album, Human Frailty, went platinum twice on the ARIA charts and gold on the RIANZ music charts. Their ’89 and ’92 albums Ghost Nation and Cut also both went platinum on the ARIA charts – with the former of the two peaking at #32 in the Swedish national charts.

2. They’re ARIA Hall of Famers

Hunters and Collectors were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on July 14th, 2005. They were inducted by politician and former Midnight Oil lead singer – Peter Garret. Acts such as Split Endz, Smoky Dawson and The Easybeats were also inducted into the Hall of Fame during that ceremony. At the time, Hunters and Collectors were split up – so when they performed Say Goodbye and Throw Your Arms Around Me it was quite a treat for the crowd, as the band would not officially reunite again until 2009.

3. They called it quits

After 17 years, the band split up in 1998. This was a planned and mutual agreement and the band embarked on one final national tour. Their Sydney show at the Coogee Bay Hotel was recorded for their Under One Roof live release CD and DVD. Their final show occurred on the 22nd of March in Melbourne.

“It was a pretty serious decision to retire, and all the guys in the band are heavyweight professionals in their respective areas of employment. Obviously, we have to put ourselves first. There’s just no momentum in the idea (of reforming).” – Mark Seymour to Patrick Donovan of The Age in 2009.

They reformed in 2005 when they were inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame and again in 2009 for Sound Relief – which was a festival hosted to aid the Victorian bushfire victims. It wasn’t until 2013 that the band reformed to play a series of shows. Though no new music has been released, they’ve been playing shows regularly since 2013 – including supporting Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band during the Melbourne shows of their 2014 Australian tour.

4. Throw Your Arms Around Me

Released on their double platinum album, Human Frailty, this is probably one of their most well-known tracks and was listed #23 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 of All Time in 2009 and in 2001 was listed in APRA’s top 30 best songs of all time. It has been covered by several artists including Crowded House, Luka Bloom and Pearl Jam (who have covered the song in Melbourne with the help of Liam Finn – the son of Crowded House frontman, Neil Finn.)

5. A pretty crowded house

Hunters and Collectors frontman, Mark Seymour is actually the older brother of Nick Seymour – who is the bass player for Crowded House. Which means that both brothers were in iconic Aussie pub rock bands during the same era.

6. They have a tribute album

In September 2013, The Crucible was released which was a Hunters and Collectors tribute album. It featured covers of their songs from various artists such as Neil Finn, Eddie Vedder, Cloud Control, Something For Kate, Birds of Tokyo and The Rubens.
