‘This is why we can’t have nice things!’ Vegan Osher Günsberg slams PETA after the animal rights groups asks Hunters and Collectors to CHANGE their name to discourage duck cruelty

They haven’t had a hit in decades, but Hunters and Collectors were thrust back into the spotlight this week after the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) asked them to change their name ‘to discourage people from hunting animals’ ahead of duck-hunting season.

And now a number of stars have come out to defend the iconic rock band from the overzealous activists, including The Bachelor’s Osher Günsberg and radio host Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald.

Taking to Instagram, Osher wrote: ‘As a person who only eats plants – this is why we can’t have nice things.’

Meanwhile, Nova personality Fitzy said on-air that PETA’s actions were ‘political correctness gone mad.’

Ashley Fruno, The Australian associate director of campaigns for PETA, wrote to the Hunters and Collectors personally on Thursday to urge the band to change their name.

‘We feel sure that it was never your intention to promote the killing of intelligent, sensitive, and defenseless animals,’ Ashley’s letter began.

Name change? Iconic Aussie rock band Hunters and Collectors were urged by PETA to change their name to discourage people from ‘killing defenseless animals’.

She continued, ‘But your name may nevertheless make hunting seem appealing to your fans’.

‘Nearly 300,000 Australian waterbirds face an agonising death during hunting season, which opens in Victoria and Tasmania next week,’ she wrote.

Ashley concluded, ‘As your Adelaide reunion show is coming up, now is the perfect time for a band namelift.’

The band has not yet responded to the letter, which was posted to PETA’s Australian website on Thursday.

Protests: Ashley is an outspoken campaigner for the animal rights organisation and has stripped off for the cause at protests in North Korea and Thailand.

‘Changing its name would be a win-win situation for the band’, Ashley was quoted as saying on the site.

She added: ‘The name would no longer be synonymous with animal suffering, and the move would help persuade people to aim for less violent hobbies.’

Last year, in an article for The Daily Telegraph, the activist argued that people who hurt animals are more likely to commit domestic abuse.

She wrote, ‘Those who abuse animals also tend to use more dangerous forms of violence and controlling behaviour towards their partners’.

Hunters and Collectors are set to perform at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 on March 4.
