Legendary Australian musician Mark Seymour and his band The Undertow have announced they will be embarking on a long-overdue east-coast theatre tour this August, following the release of his ninth studio album, Mayday, this month.

Having spent more than 30 years as an active performer, Seymour is understandably something of a revered figure among Australian music history, having been a part of the iconic Hunters & Collectors as well as a lauded solo artist in his own right. It’s been a prolific stint on his own, too, having dropped eight studio albums since 1997 including that year’s King Without A Clue, 2001’s One Eyed Man, 2007’s Westgate, 2011’s Undertow — from which his band’s name is derived — and a 2013 covers album, Seventh Heaven Club, featuring cuts originally penned by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Otis Redding and more.

Mayday will add to the existing catalogue upon its release next Friday, 29 May, via Liberation Music, giving fans ample time to wrap their heads around the new, highly personal works proffered by Seymour & Co – the tour kicks off at Sydney’s Factory Theatre on Saturday, 1 August, and takes in shows in Melbourne (National Theatre, all-ages, 7 August) and Brisbane (Old Museum, all-ages, 15 August).

The first taste from the album comes in the form of new single Football Train, a “tragic tale of the boy who might not have a home but does have a footy team”, while additional known tracks include the affecting narratives of FIFO and Two Dollar Punter. You can check out the Football Train clip below.

If you already know that you’ll want to be catching the man and his band in the flesh, there will be a Frontier Touring members’ pre-sale held from 2pm AEST next Tuesday, 26 May, for 24 hours or until the allocation is exhausted. See the Frontier Touring website for more information.

General-release tickets for Mark Seymour & The Undertow’s August east-coast tour will go on sale from 10am local time next Friday, 29 May.
