Hunters & Collectors last night proved they’ve lost none of their fire with a secret warm-up show at Castlemaine’s Theatre Royal, ahead of their first Australian tour in 15 years.

Billed as Scar Stories – the night was a fundraiser for the cancer awareness group of the same name – the iconic Melbourne seven-piece powered through a two-and-a-half hour, 26-song setlist of radio favourites and back catalogue gems.

Highlights included opener “Talking To A Stranger” – their 1982 debut single, remixed by the Avalanches on recent H&C tribute album Crucible – a ferocious “Say Goodbye”, the now-traditional sing-along for “Throw Your Arms Around Me”, the band’s covers of Sardine V’s “Stuck On You” and Ray Charles’ “I Believe”, and a gloriously noisy “42 Wheels”.

After splitting in 1998, Hunters & Collectors re-formed last year to perform at the 2013 AFL Grand Final. They kick off a winery tour this Saturday for a day on the green, support Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band at AAMI Park in February and play theatre shows in Sydney and Melbourne in April.
