January Rain live, 1987

Stuart : 11 March 2013 15:45 : Vault

Source: 1987 05 16 Live at The Channel, Boston, USA (for Westwood One) Cassette

There are a couple of eras that we have not covered too heavily in our Vault series so far – so today I went looking for early What’s A Few Men era material for you… but instead found January Rain, from the Living Daylight EP, and thought… this is a great track that was never released in live form, so why not…? ๐Ÿ™‚

This is from a show that appeared to be played live to American radio as part of their Living Daylight EP tour of 1987.

The other era we must cover more soon is Demon Flower. There are speed issues in the cassettes (thankfully a fixed speed error rather than varying speed issues, so should be correctable), and a lot of Demon Flower already appears on Living, but we still have much to share…

Stiff live, 1983

Stuart : 25 February 2013 11:00 : Vault

Source: Unlabelled Cassette, Estimated Early 1983

It’s been a couple of months since we provided something so outlandishly crazy to bring a smile to the “do you have anything from The Fireman’s Curse!?” era maddies. If this is you, we have a treat for you this week.

Stiff is a track that appears to have narrowly missing inclusion on The Fireman’s Curse album. Didn’t rock enough? Anyway, we do not have a studio version of it – frankly, we are impressed we have our hands on anything from this era anyway – but we do have it live.

John Archer seems to have it all under control with the bass but uncertainty reigns elsewhere…

Here’s another completely new song from the archives – Children in the Clover; studio demo from the Ghost Nation sessions. Very much in the style of other Hunters and Collectors songs of the era. Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

Skin of Our Teeth, live 2011

Stuart : 4 February 2013 12:00 : Vault

Source: 2011 12 03 V8s, Homebush, Sydney, Australia (Dolby AC3 2.0 DVD)

There are strong arguments for and against putting this particular track up, but we have been tipped over the edge by a request from Stephen.

Skin Of Our Teeth was on the self titled album back in 1982, and, despite having a reputation as a powerful live track, had not been played live since 1983. As a treat for the diehard fans, Hunters decided to give Skin Of Our Teeth a run at the V8’s gig in 2011. We understand that around half of the preparation time for the gig went into nutting out this song. Barry had not even heard it.

The live performance in Sydney was assisted by an eerie ‘decay’ video, which it would be great to put online at some stage. The performance here is imperfect – it did not quite come off as planned. But an imperfect classic performance worth sharing, so here it is…

When these DAT (Digital Audio Tapes) recordings work, they often work magnificently. Here’s an energetic recording of Crime of Passion, an Eric Gradman cover that originally appeared on the 1990 Ghost Nation album, performed up here on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Almost A Part Of Me

For our first 2013 track, we have another completely unheard of CD quality studio rarity! As with our previous mysterious rarities, again we do not know the origin or story behind this one! What’s A Few Men or Ghost Nation era? Write your own adventure? ๐Ÿ™‚

Inside Looking Out, live 1989

Stuart : 7 January 2013 16:58 : Vault

Source: 1989 03 21 Middle Park Hotel, Melbourne, Australia Cassette

(New Year bonus series)

Frankly, I am uncertain on the story for this track and am not even completely sure I have named it properly. Mark introduces it in one era gig as an “old song”, and there seem to be some lyrics in common with a song called “Inside Looking Out”, which appears to exist on some Ghost Nation era setlists.

Whatever it is, you are going to love it anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ And feel free to correct us if we are missing something!

Taken from the Ghost Nation album, the only live version of Lazy Summer Day out there is an acoustic live recording hidden away on The Way You Live 12″ and CD single from back in 1990. Here, we have dug out an impromptu performance of Lazy Summer Day from the Fitzgerald Hotel in 1989.

Sex, live 1982

(New Year bonus series)

I am going to be away from the computer for a couple of weekends, so am going to put up a few tracks in advance for your enjoyment…

The first is Sex. This track complements Long Walk Home, which I put up as an example of the ‘X’ direction live tracks were taking in the Fireman’s Curse era. Sex demostrates a far more erratic, alternative vision of the band – one that ultimately fell over.

Quite a strange beast, this one.

Now for a track from a recording that noone has thought of requesting yet…! ๐Ÿ™‚

The last Hunters and Collectors gig before breaking up in 1998 was an invitation only gig at Melbourne’s Hi Fi Bar. A few ‘unusual’ things happened at this gig, and this is one of them. This track… features Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly!

Summersault, live 1981

Stuart : 3 December 2012 17:13 : Vault

Source: 1981 11 13 Prospect Hill Hotel, Melbourne, Australia Cassette

True Believers has had an ‘Easter Egg’ of a few odd song names sitting on the website for some time that was discovered today by Tammy – who subsequently requested ‘Summersault’!

So here it is – Summersault is a very early experimental song that went nowhere and was probably only played a handful of times. This one is in mono, as the original tape had vocals and minor effects on left and everything else on right. I presume Rob will be able to do a much better job – the Horn of Plenty first gig recordings also came from tapes recorded this way.

Towtruck, live 1983

Hunters and Mark Brisbane fan John mentioned back when we opened the vaults an interest in a live version of Towtruck. Jack Howard has always told us it was incredible live, so it was a good pick. We are please to have a few versions of it live, but have held on for more than four months before letting one loose. This recording is worth the wait!

The archives remain broader and deeper than presented to date – we are but in the early stages ๐Ÿ™‚

Everything You Love (Price of Freedom), live 1989

Stuart : 19 November 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1989 01 26 Sydney Cove Tavern, Sydney, Australia Cassette

This week we move to an early gig from the Ghost Nation era, and find a live track called Everything You Love. After a complete change of lyrics, this song eventually morphed into The Price of Freedom, a b-side from the When The River Runs Dry single.

The quality is not the best on this recording – not sure if the guitar at the start is deliberate or not – and the speed did not seem correct from the tape – I have sped it up by 3%. It is likely we will significantly clean this one up at some stage.

Edge of Nowhere, live 1993

Stuart : 5 November 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1993 05 02 Sammys, Dunedin, New Zealand Cassette

Fan Mark has been helping us out with some of the technical aspects of the website lately, and asked about Cut era shows in New Zealand. A bad quirk of timing meant he missed this tour, and the opportunity to hear many great tracks from Cut live.

We found this recording from Sammy’s, also known as Slimy’s Cabaret, where Mark played drums in bands himself a few moons ago. From a fantastic set list, Mark has picked Edge of Nowhere. This great track from the Cut album has never been officially released in a live form. We are not 100% satisfied with the quality – this is a recording that will likely improve with further editing.

Red Leather Belt, live in studio 1985

Stuart : 29 October 2012 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1985 01 06 Direct to Digital, Hardware St, Melbourne, Australia cassette

Fan Tammy has been helping us type out articles and this week asks…ย if there is another version of “Red Leather Belt’ knocking around?ย Well yes, of course! This week we have dug up a ‘live in studio’ style recording of Red Leather Belt, also known as Honey In The Jar, from January 1985.

Honey in the Jar was originally an instrumental b-side on the Australian Is There Anybody In There? 12″ single. More recently, it appeared on the Mutations rarities album and a live version with lyrics, titled Red Leather Belt, appeared on the Human Frailty 20th Anniversary edition bonus DVD. In the vault, we are pleased to note that the version here today is not the only version ๐Ÿ™‚
