Drop in the Ocean live, 1994

Stuart : 29 July 2013 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1994 04 25 Logo, Hamburg, Germany Cassette

We’ve been poking around the Demon Flower recordings recently and realised that at least two songs exist that were played live but never released in a live form…

This week we have the first – Drop in the Ocean. A single back in the day, but rarer in live form. This recording has been sped up by 5% from the original tape due to issues with the tape deck of the time. It’s timing may still not be perfect.

This is taken from the Hunters last overseas expedition…!

Anticipation live and Radio Ads, The Jetsonnes, 1980

Stuart : 22 July 2013 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1980 Jetsonnes Advertisements and Perf T2 Cassette

The vault marks it’s one year anniversary this week!

To celebrate, we have something completely out of nowhere… the pre-Hunters band The Jetsonnes, performing the track Anticipation live!

The Jetsonnes contained Hunters members Mark Seymour (guitar), John Archer (bass), Doug Falconer (drums) and Rob Miles (sound). Margot O’Neill on vocals was the only member not to continue when the Hunters formed in 1981.

As an extra bonus, we have also included some early, perhaps embarrassing, Jetsonnes radio advertisements. That’s Rob on the voiceover, and what appears to be a very early Mark vocal…

Love That I Long For live, 1992

Stuart : 15 July 2013 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1992 12 14 Palais Theatre, Melboune, Australia Cassette

This week we have a album track from the classic Cut album, never released anywhere in a live form.

The recording seems a little ‘bright’, but it remains an interesting interpretation and recording of Love That I Long For ๐Ÿ™‚

Next week will make one full year of The Vault… and we are cooking up something particularly surprising…

Do You See What I See? feat Peter Garrett live, 1998

Stuart : 8 July 2013 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1998 03 23 Hi Fi Bar (4th night, invite only), Melbourne, Australia DAT

Fan Roger came forward with this week with a corker of a suggestion:

…is it true that Peter Garrett got up on stage and performed with the band at their three night farewell stand? And if it is, wouldn’t the week he retired from political office be an awesome time to let that puppy out?

The answers are “yes” and “yes!” ๐Ÿ™‚

For your listening enjoyment, this weeks track is Peter Garrett performing the Hunters classic Do You See What I See? with Mark and the band. Peter’s vocal is a bit weak in the mix and the band rolls over him a bit, but he’s definitely there!

Also, Peter does a brief speech before joining in the song, which we have also included.

Now that Peter’s retiring from politics… some Midnight Oil gigs would be great!

Eggheart live, 1982

Stuart : 1 July 2013 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1982 03 27 Collendina, Ocean Grove, Australia

… and we welcome the new Financial Year with the sort of punishment we are proud to deliver here at True Believers …

Our live records indicate that Eggheart was the first Fireman’s Curse song to debut – long before the recording and release of said ill fated album.

It definitely seems to make more sense live. This remains not for the faint hearted.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Hear the Whistle Blow demo, 1989

Stuart : 24 June 2013 12:00 : Vault

Source: 1989 01 Ghost Nation material rehearsal Cassette

In the midst of many exciting tapes found in the Vault was this one – a set of Ghost Nation demos with mostly unfamiliar, strange names through it. Then, horrifically, only about 16 minutes of the tape worked before it turned into distortion ๐Ÿ™

Hear the Whistle Blow is a never heard before demo from that 16 minutes that survived ๐Ÿ™‚

99th Home Position, live 1986

Stuart : 17 June 2013 10:55 : Vault

Source: 1986 12 04 The Uptown Lounge, Athens, Georgia, USA Cassette

The most celebrated Hunters era – Human Frailty – is also one of the most challenging when it comes to providing rarities. Most tracks already appear live and there are few recordings from 1986!

It was therefore pleasing to find this great US recording of 99th Home Position, a song that has never been officially released in live form…! ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr Bigmouth, live 1995

This week we have Mr Bigmouth, a rarer track from the Demon Flower album, from the Live Demons in Amsterdam promo EP!

This is the third track we have provided here from the EP, following True Tears of Joy in February and Holy Grail in April.

We have also realised we have a few more Demon Flower era rarities than we realised…

Tender Kinder Baby live, 1982

Returning back to the 1982 debut self titled album, this week we have a request from Jason in Brisbane – Tender Kinder Baby.

Early in 1982, Rob got the live stereo mix to cassette of these complex early gigs right – this is from one of the first recordings where the quality takes a noticeable jump in quality ๐Ÿ™‚

The performance is interesting…

When The River Runs Dry live, 1998

This one is for Gary, who convicingly pleads:

…as they played the last chorus I consciously committed the moment to memory, the last time I would ever see H&C live

We think it’s pretty cool when we can provide a favourite track from a favourite concert some 15 years ago.

So here is a song we all know, from a hot summer evening in Darwin…

Gunga Din live, 1982

Stuart : 20 May 2013 12:44 : Vault

Source: 1982 06 12 San Miguel Hotel, Sydney, Australia Cassette

The other week, I sought more information from the band on the mysterious “Gung”, which can be found a few live recordings from around the era when Payload and The Fireman’s Curse were recorded.

Subtle as a brick, I was informed:

Gunga Din. Jesus H Christ!

This was followed up by the Rob’s softer feedback of:

“You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!” (the peom by Rudyard Kipling.)

Which has left me wondering if the initial response was because of this webmaster’s lack of poetry knowledge or the songs reappearance… I suspect the former ๐Ÿ™‚

A bit of further research indicates this may even be a cover, as the poem has appeared in songs prior to this version in 1982.

It’s another weird one for the early maddies. You know who you are…

So Long Ago live, 1987

As part of our commitment to covering every Hunters era, this week we return to What’s A Few Men? for the first time since March.

Here we have a different, early version of So Long Ago that would appear to be from before the What’s A Few Men? recording sessions.

It is a mid creation glimpse of a song that was later to become a much enjoyed album track.

Grindstone live, 1992

Stuart : 6 May 2013 12:45 : Vault

Source: 1992 12 14 Palais Theatre, Melboune, Australia Cassette

Cut seems to occupy a strange part in the Hunters journey – a last attempt at hitting it ‘big’ with a renowned American producer, yet after the US record company Atlantic had pulled the plug.

It brought Hunters to a new generation in Australia and spawned a massive six top 100 singles – yet band feelings remain mixed.

The popularity of album tracks that were not singles speaks volumes about the ongoing following of the Cut album. This is one of them – Grindstone – which appears courtesy of a request from Gary.

How Does Your Garden Grow? rough mix, 1993

Stuart : 29 April 2013 12:45 : Vault

Source: 1993 12 Demon Flower Rough Mixes

This week we have decided to provide something that noone has requested. It is something noone could have requested as it is a completely unknown song, never knowingly played live, found on a rough mix tape.

This is one for the Demon Flower fans who are already spoiled for tracks on the Living in Large Rooms and Lounges album. How Does Your Garden Grow? was recorded for Demon Flower but did not make the final cut ๐Ÿ™‚

Rock on!

Lumps of Lead live, 1982

Stuart : 22 April 2013 13:39 : Vault

Source: 1982 08 06 Oxford Hotel, Melbourne, Australia Cassette

Long starved of any live material from the mysterious, dark early days of Hunters and Collectors, fans of the early 1980’s Hunnas continue to appear on our website keen on what can be found…

This week Jason asks us:

Hey, I’ve been thrashing the H+C stuff, thanks very much. Do you have a live version of Lumps of Lead

The response from us:

Yes. Yes I do.

In fact, I think the archives have a few recordings of Lumps of Lead through 1982 and 1983.

Here’s one from the Oxford Hotel in Melbourne. The full recording of this gig is less likely to see the light of day due to suspected speed issues on side two of the tape. Likely caused by the recording equipment of the time.. but then again…

Relief live to 2 Track, 1985

Stuart : 15 April 2013 13:40 : Vault

Source: 1985 01 15 06 Live Two Tracks Cassette

Today’s track results from a modest request from Stephen:

I loved the Hear No Evil acoustic version which was quite different from the released version.

Is there another song that differs drastically from the album version, either in a early demo style form, or a later reworked live form?

Well… the good news is that we have a few options to fulfill this request.

This week we have picked an early version of a track from the Human Frailty album. A less polished, harder rocking 6 minute 17 second early live to two track recording of Relief!

You will love this…

…and this week a request from Gary – Running Water live!

Amazingly, this is a difficult recording to find – it took about half an hour of trawling through recordings to find a copy. It’s another example of a track that fans often love but the band themselves were not too fussed about. Enjoy!

It been a while since our last What’s A Few Men?/Fate era rarity – so this week we are pleased to present a live incarnation of Wishing Well from Sweden!

Now, I am not completely confident on the speed of this recording. The original seemed slow; so this version is sped up by 2%. Please feel free to experiment and advise on what this should be…! ๐Ÿ™‚

Fan Mark H really wants to hear a live version of Judas Sheep, one of his all time favourite Hunters songs. He’s clearly a sick chap, but one can not deny such a friendly, crazy request that is so easy to fulfill. Now no more Fireman’s Curse era for a few weeks – let’s not upset the band! ๐Ÿ™‚
